Sonmarg is the perfect location for all those who appreciate outdoor activities and would want to camp at a hill station. This little hill resort attracts a lot of tourists who come to admire the breathtaking scenery and snow-capped peaks. Sonmarg, also called the “Meadow of Gold,” is situated in a valley filled with lakes and flowers. In Hindi, the term “Son” literally translates to “Gold,” and its golden beauty dusted with white snow is especially lovely in the spring. The Sindh river provides nourishment for the region’s unique flora. Ladakh may be accessed by Sonmarg.

Silver birch, fir, pine, sycamore, and alpine flowers can be found in Sonmarg’s extensive woodlands. For peaceful serenity and calming natural splendor, nature lovers flock to this location often. The additional attractions are the breathtaking meadows and lakes with azure waters. The majestic mountains covered in snow are very breathtaking to behold.

Principal Attractions

Beneath towering pines, Sonmarg serves as the base camp for the revered Amarnath yatra. Thousands of tourists travel to Sonmarg during the July–August period each year, when the yatra is held.

Make sure to visit Nilagrad, where the Indus River meets a confluence of mountain rivers, while you are in Sonmarg. The most remarkable feature of this location is the pure red river water, which is said to have healing properties for skin conditions. It is common for people to bathe in this water.

A great place to have a picnic is Krishnasar Lake, one of the most captivating lakes in the chain of numerous Himalayan lakes. At 3801 meters above sea level, the location offers a calm and serene ambiance amid dense alpine surroundings. Here, people enjoy other water sports and trout fishing. Even more well-known is Vishansar Lake.

Explore Sonmarg’s unspoiled splendor by taking a stroll across the unique Baltal grasslands. Baltal lies near the Amarnath cave and is located at the base of Zoji-la-pass, which is the entry point to the Ladakh plateau at 3540 meters above sea level. During the Amarnath yatra, a lot of pilgrims pass through the Baltal meadows.

Temperature

It’s an alpine day. The moderate summers (April to June) allow one to survive with thick cotton clothing. However, December through February sees a lot of snowfall in the area. Summer is the ideal season to visit Sonamarg.

Accommodation

In Sonmarg, there are many of hotels and lodges to choose from, all at different price points. For the most part, these are only used in the summer. It is possible to rent guest rooms or cottages in Sonmarg throughout the winter. JKTDC, a government project, offers many Huts and a Dak Banglow for rent.
